How to Create Joyous Winter Gatherings (and Get Them on the Calendar!)

The winter months are an excellent time to surround yourself with friends and family. But it’s easy for the shorter days to drift by (and dissolve into the next season!) without catching up with the special people in your life.

Use the upcoming weeks to think about the people you want to see—and how you can make your winter gatherings happen (before spring rolls around). Here are some ideas to get you started.

Explore activities to do with friends

  • Schedule some time with your girlfriends—get together for a power yoga class or a walk. When you’re done, grab a coffee or a green juice to catch up. What a lovely treat when the weather is crisp!

  • Make some upcoming plans for dinner or an outing. The first weeks of the new year are the perfect time to look ahead and schedule time together.
    • Check out show dates for a play or musical
    • Read and discuss a book (e.g., a literary classic or New York Times Best Seller)
    • Schedule a spa day
    • Learn something new together (e.g., go on a winery tour, take a cooking class or attend a lecture)

Create cozy winter moments with the people you love

  • Sunday brunch and a favorite recipe
  • Invite friends and family over for a lazy Sunday brunch. Keep the preparation simple by choosing no-fuss recipes. Our absolute favorite at partager la joie is homemade Belgian waffles.

The best part about this easy-to-make recipe is its versatility. For example, you can create a Belgian waffles brunch for your child’s sleepover party or for your family and friends, complete with warm maple syrup, assorted berries and plenty of whipped cream.

  • Playgroup with a surprise treat
  • For families with young children, host a playgroup (possibly on a winter school holiday).   Organize a simple craft to do indoors or get everyone outside for ice skating or some playtime in the snow.  Try this fun craft to create paper snowflakes!

Whether you host your playgroup indoors or outside, delight your young guests (and parents!) with a hot chocolate bar. Let the children customize their drinks (with their parent’s help), by offering toppings such as marshmallows, whipped cream, shaved chocolate, and crushed candy cane.

  • Saturday lunch around the fire
  • Spend a Saturday lunch with your favorite neighbors, friends, and family by inviting them over for beautiful food and relaxed conversation.

Gather around the fireplace with a charcuterie sharing board, followed by simple-ingredient soups and crusty artisan bread. See our minestrone and chicken soup recipes.

    Have fun decorating!

As you prepare for your winter gatherings, make your guests feel special with thoughtful decorative touches. To ensure that you enjoy every moment with your guests, focus on simplicity and elegance...

    • Create a seasonal arrangement, such as forced paperwhites or other favorite bulbs in a pretty glass container.

    • Prepare a serving tray with a steaming pot of tea and warm scones for an impromptu morning or afternoon tea. To give the setting a special touch, add a bud vase with a sprig of eucalyptus and a small white flower.

    • Display some seasonal branches (white birch branches are a winter favorite) on your pre-dinner date cocktail table (or kitchen island). Place the delicate branches around a cheese board (grab a wooden board and arrange it with local cheeses, honey and artisan crackers) and your favorite wine pairings.

    Make beautiful gatherings happen

Whether you like to host at home or organize outings, January and the following winter weeks are a great time to reach out to those you love and bring everyone together. The key is to settle on the dates then relax, be yourself and focus on creating joyful winter gatherings.

As we say at partager la joie, “Time passes quickly, so it’s important to share joy often!”
